We love Sauerkraut and we want to show you how easy it is to make and how it's satisfying both to your pallet and wallet. If you've never had fresh homemade sauerkraut you're in for a delicious treat. If you're an old hand at making sauerkraut and you'd like to swap ideas, recipes or just socialize this is the event for you.
One evening is not enough time to make and sample sauerkraut so we've planned a two step back door approach for this demonstration. We'll make a batch of sauerkraut about a week before the June 1st meetup so that we will have some fresh cultured veggies to sample and jar. From this first batch everyone at the meetup will receive a jar of sauerkraut to take home to compliment your healthy home cooked meals, Yum! Then we'll move on to the front door approach and that means we'll wash, chop and season our next batch of cultured veggies. The process is a little time consuming but many hands will make lighter work.
Although our joy in making and sharing our knowledge is a labor of love we personally require no meeting fee, but we thought it would be appropriate to ask for a small reimbusement fee to help cover the cost of the fresh organic produce and new quart jars. I suspect that the material cost of a jar of sauerkraut will be approximately in the $1.50 to $2.50 range. I will have an accurate cost of materials at the meetup. (Have you noticed that current prices of fresh sauerkraut in health food stores is about $9.00 per pint!) So come and learn how to make cultured veggies... your wallet will thank you and your pallet will love you!
Additionally we can share a meal together if everyone brings a dish to share, potluck style dining. We'll supply plates and utensils, etc. I'll make brown rice in our solar cooker and maybe I can talk Dan into making his famous "macromole" (that's guacamole with a macro twist!) Chips anyone?

Hi all, the last time I tried to culture some cabbage I was banned from the kitchen. I remember as a young lad my mother used a large crock and made about 15 to 20 quarts + or- ? I sure miss it and would very much like to rebuild the connection with "just good o'l food. It seems like it has been forever since I have had somthing so pleasent. See ya soon. Jim

This is gonna be great! I will bring some of my near-famous kefir cheese dip (with lots of garlic in it, plus herbs & sun-dried tomatoes - yumm) and some veggies to dip in it :-)

Who attended?

    •  Interesting and stimulating conversation. Very nice party.
    •  I can't thank Teresa & Dan enough for their generosity in creating such a great experience for all of us, including the great sauerkraut (love the crunchy texture!). What an effort, to make a huge batch of kraut, put in jars for each of us, answer a million questions, cook up a number of dishes for the potluck, etc. (sorry we didn't have time to help you make the new batch - leaving you with even more work!) I really enjoyed meeting several of our members, both new and those who have been around for awhile, and having a chance to relax and chat for a change. I'm so glad I started this group!! Thanks sooooo much, Teresa & Dan and everyone who participated!!
    •  It was so nice to share Teresa and Dan's home and meet their children. I really enjoyed the relaxed atmosphere and meeting so many great people. Thanks to everyone who attended. And a special thanks to Teresa and Dan for the wonderful kraut! Natalie

Our hosts really pre-planned well. thank you.
    •  Many thanks to Theresa & Dan for opening up their house. It was great meeting people; everyone had interesting stories and SO much information! Now I'm not afraid to make kraut at home (in somewhat smaller batches).
    •  This was a good meeting. Thanks Teresa.
    •  Wonderful, go to the next one for sure!

Very nice group of people! Very helpful to have others more experienced in fermentation, to learn from. Theresa and Dan were so gracious to open their home to everyone and show us how they made sauerkraut...they even gave us a jar of it to take home to try. I now know more about veggie fermenting than before and that is very helpful.
